The Africa Collection

Created by artist Chinwe Russell, The Africa Collection reflects her journey to reclaim a sense of belonging after spending over 25 years in Europe. Inspired by a desire to reconnect with her roots and address feelings of displacement, Russell researched African tribes, traditions, and ancient gods that shaped traditional beliefs before European influence. This exploration led to a collection examining the roles of various tribes and gods in African society, represented through decorated statues. Prompted in part by the Black Lives Matter movement and supported by Arts Council England, the exhibition encourages organisations to explore Africa’s diverse cultures and promote inclusivity. This exhibition is a great way to encourage a diverse audiences into your venues.

This exhibition invites viewers to rediscover Africa’s indigenous people, their cultures, traditions, and ancient gods, offering an essential avenue for injecting a diverse perspective into exhibitions

Depending on the size of the gallery and curatorial preference, the Africa exhibition can be presented either in its entirety or as two distinct exhibitions:

The 20 Tribes of Africa

The 20 Gods of Africa

The 20 Tribes of Africa exhibition features 20 acrylic paintings on canvas, each depicting a different African tribe.

The 20 Gods of Africa exhibition presents ceramic sculptures, each one illustrating stories about a particular African deity.
